Chapter 16
When Liam returned home, his mother was cleaning the kitchen. He greeted her cordially but excused himself, claiming he was tired. In his room he undressed and curled up in bed. He covered himself and lay there until sleep took him.
He dreamt of Jeremy: the movie star smile, beautiful eyes, sexy body, his vigorous, passionate lovemaking. When he awoke in the middle of the night, he'd kicked the covers off in his sleep and a cool breeze was flowing over his naked body. The window was open. Had he opened it? He could not remember. Perhaps in his stupor he had. He stared out the window to the street outside. Sometimes the curtains would smudge the view in a grey haze as it danced on the wind. The wind. Liam huffed and turned over.
There was someone standing beside his bed.
He screamed and jumped up with his fists poised, but in the flash of a moment before he punched, he saw it was his mother. He was confused--lowered his arms and let his fingers uncurl. As the shock subsided, he realized he was naked and he had a full, throbbing erection. He grabbed a pillow and covered himself. "Mother." He sighed, sat down, and asked, "What do you want?"
"I heard you moaning. I thought something was wrong. Are you okay?" Mildred asked. Liam looked up at her dark form, a shadowy silhouette in the gloom. He thought he detected a distinct lack of actual concern in her voice, but maybe it was just his state of mind. The dream maybe...lingering sleep. Must be it. He was only half awake. He replied, "I'm fine. Just a nightmare."
"A nightmare?"
"Yeah. I didn't mean to bother you. Now, could you please leave? I'm not dressed."
Mildred didn't say another word. She turned around and walked out of the room, closing the door behind her. Liam took several deep breaths in order to completely calm down. He picked his jeans up off the floor and pulled his pack of Marlboros from the front pocket. He crawled over the bed and off it, across the floor to the window, where he lit up. He blew the smoke out the window but most of it just floated right back in. He felt like a teenager again. This was something he'd done back in those days. He was still surprised he'd never been caught. He liked the way the curtains caressed him in their dance upon the breeze. He liked it so much, his erection was refusing to go down. He didn't care. Even if there were anyone out there, they'd never be able to see it. The length of the window did not go all the way to the floor so he was covered as he sat there, elbow on the sill.
He almost expected someone to be out there. He scrutinized the view before him and the shadows and the dark windows across the street. Although the idea of being secretly watched was unnerving, he sort of wished there was someone spying on him.
